“ Like stepping back in time, very old fashioned pub, not changed in centuries. We had a private dinning room for a much overdue friends get together. Note it is old fashioned and the stairs to the dinning rooms are dark and steep. But this adds to the atmosphere. Famous for Charles Dickens and the Hell Fire Club. Service was impeccable despite the stairs and all our food was very good. Sam Smith's ales including AF Brown Ale. Food was great can't fault it if you want to step back in time. ”
“ Okay I have NEVER been in this situation before with a review. I don't want to give it five stars because I want to keep it a secret from everyone I know and have it just for myself. Deep sigh, I have to do right by the publicans and say that it's the most precious, wonderful pub in London. I won't give anything away about its history but as a novelist, it is genuinely fascinating. Ask them about it and beg to hear the story. Aside from that, the drinks are great and the food is old fashioned in the best way and delicious. I do not recommend this pub because I don't want it overrun by all and sundry but...I do recommend it very highly. Friendly, warm, rich in history, and a world away from the noise of modern London. I had the special chicken pie and mash with crunchy veg and lip-smacking gravy. ”
“ Absolutely outstanding experience! The food was incredibly delicious, every dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented. What truly made it special was the warm hospitality. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for. Hands down the best service I’ve had in a long time. Highly recommend! ”
“ First visited this old gem of a place in 1981 when my sister lived in London. I always go here for a pint or two when I'm visiting the city. It is always on my list of places to go for a beer. The area has changed enormously since my first visit, but the G & V atmosphere and feeling of history inside feels just as authentic as it did 44 years ago !! I'll be retuning soon and as always it won't disappoint... ”
“ Fascinating place Small and very atmospheric - feels almost unchanged from 200 years ago- with friendly staff, and the manager is a great, larger-than-life character! Mainly business types there - some in bowler hats and all! Historic pub both frequented by Charles Dickens and mentioned in his books. For me the draw was the fact that the infamous Hellfire Club met there before moving out of the limelight to West Wycombe. According to the manager they used to ‘party’ in the cellars ! Great selection of traditional English food. Highly recommended for a friendly and historical atmosphere with good food and drinks. ”
“ An antique, historic gem of a London City bar. Step back a couple hundred years in the city and entering this beautifully preserved bar. Narrow alleyway location provides a city hideaway with excellent alley drinking & a large drinking hall. A large square bar room with the smallest bar of all my reviews to date; a one person pillbox bar with superb Samuel Smiths on draught. This is a classic Dickensian alcove bar with many large tables & some pew bench seating. It's a gin parlour vibe with a hideaway room in the corner. The painted ceiling & walls could be 100 years old with a superb original tiled oven & Victorian fireplace. Equally antiquarian artwork decorate the walls around decorative pillars, with a strong recollection of Dickens & he being a frequent diner. Comfortable in its style & no pretence, this drinking establishment is a very well preserved piece of London history. ”
“ The George and Vulture is a restaurant/pub in London. There has been an inn on the site, which is off Lombard Street in the historic City of London district, since 1142. It was said to be a meeting place of the notorious Hell-Fire Club and is now a revered City chop house. The staff are friendly and attentive & go above and beyond to make your visit memorable. The historical history is fascinating & the residents' ghosts are a wonderful factor in this establishment. Definitely will return & I highly recommend a visit. ”
“ Since coming across this fabulous tucked away pub last year that has very strong ties to Charles Dickens. I've been wanting to bring my father who is a massive fan of his life and works. Due to I'll health this been difficult but we finally got to share this London treasure with him. He was totally blown away by the atmosphere and authenticity of this pub. The Managers were such lovely people and they took the time to tell us their extensive knowledge of the history of this pub. Also the food was so so good, empty plates around!! I highly recommend this pub and make sure you book to avoid disappointment. ”
